Trance track structure

Trance is built in blocks of 8, 16 and 32 bars, so DJs can mix it and dancers can feel each change coming. Here's the usual shape of a club track.

Why everything is in multiples of 8

Dance music phrases in 8-bar blocks. Changes land at the start of a block: a new element comes in, a filter opens, the breakdown starts. DJs count on this to line up two tracks, and listeners feel it even when they don't count it. At 138 BPM, one bar is about 1.74 seconds, so 8 bars is about 14 seconds and 32 bars about 56.

A typical club mix

  • Intro (32 bars): kick, bass and percussion, building gradually. Keep it free of melody so a DJ can mix it over the end of the previous track.
  • Build into the first section (16 to 32 bars): add chords, an arp or a hint of the lead, filtered.
  • First breakdown (16 to 32 bars): the kick drops out and the chords and melody take over.
  • Main breakdown (32 to 64 bars): the emotional centre of the track, often with the full melody played on a piano or pad, then a build-up.
  • Drop or climax (32 bars): everything at once, the lead at full strength.
  • Outro (32 bars): strip back to drums and bass, mirroring the intro, so the next DJ can mix out.

That comes to about 7 to 8 minutes at 138 BPM. The Arrangement Planner lays out the sections, shows the timings at your tempo, and exports markers your DAW can import.

Radio edit

A radio edit cuts the track to about 3 minutes: a short intro (8 bars or none), straight into the main hook, one breakdown and a shorter drop. Streaming playlists favour edits, while DJs want the extended mix, so most releases include both.

Keeping a long track interesting

  • Change something every 8 bars, even subtly: a new percussion layer, a filter opening, a fill.
  • Use fills and FX to mark the start of each 16 or 32-bar block: a reverse cymbal, a short riser or a snare fill. The FX Maker and Build-up Generator make both.
  • Hold back the full lead until the climax. Hinting at it earlier (filtered, or just the first phrase) makes the payoff bigger.
