How to make a trance build-up
A build-up exists to make the drop feel bigger. It works by raising tension on several layers at once, then taking it all away for a moment before everything comes back.
How long?
Most trance build-ups run 8 or 16 bars, after a breakdown. At 138 BPM, 8 bars is about 14 seconds and 16 bars about 28. Short fills of 1 or 2 bars also lead into new sections elsewhere in the track.
1. The snare roll
The backbone of a trance build is a snare roll that speeds up: quarter notes, then 8ths, then 16ths, often finishing on 32nds or triplets in the last bar. Rising velocity (or volume) and pitch make it feel like it's climbing. The Build-up Generator writes accelerating rolls at any length and exports them as MIDI.
2. Risers and noise
A white-noise riser sweeps up in pitch and volume and ends exactly on the drop. Line it up so it finishes on the downbeat. A reverse cymbal does the same job in the last bar. Make both, cut to the exact length at your tempo, in the Riser and FX Maker.
3. Filter the music
Put a high-pass filter on the music bus (everything except the riser and snare) and sweep it up through the build. The low end drains away, so when the kick and bass come back on the drop, they hit harder. A low-pass on the lead opening at the same time adds brightness as it climbs. Draw both sweeps as automation in the Automation Builder.
4. Pitch and energy
- Pitch the snare and riser up gradually, or automate a pitch bend on the lead for the last bar.
- Increase reverb and delay sends as the build goes, so it gets wider and washier.
- Drop the kick for the build, or play it in 8ths or 16ths in the final bars for a pounding finish.
5. The gap
The most powerful moment in a build is often the silence just before the drop: half a beat to a full bar where almost everything stops. A single vocal, a reverse reverb or a sweep can carry across it. That gap resets the listener's ears, so the drop sounds louder than it is.
6. The drop
Land on the downbeat with everything at once: kick, bass, lead, and an impact (a sub boom with a noise crash) to underline it. A downlifter on the first bar of the drop releases the build's energy. The FX Maker makes both.
