Ear Trainer
Hear a progression, a chord or an interval on a supersaw and name it. The faster you can hear what's going on in a track, the faster you can write your own. Ten new questions every day.
What you're listening for
Progressions. Trance leans on a handful of four-chord moves. Listen to where the first chord sits (home, or somewhere restless), whether the bass climbs or falls, and whether the last chord pulls you back to the start. The answers are in Roman numerals, so the skill carries over to every key.
Chord types. Major sounds bright and settled, minor darker. Sus2 and sus4 leave out the third, so they sound open and unresolved: perfect for breakdown pads. Diminished is tense and rare.
Intervals. The distance between two notes. Trance hooks love the 4th, the 5th and the octave, and the minor 3rd and 6th give them their bittersweet colour.
The daily challenge is the same ten questions for everyone each day, mixing all three. Copy your result to compare with friends.
Questions
Can I replay a question?
Yes, as often as you like, and it doesn't count against you. Press Play or the space bar.
Where are my stats kept?
In this browser only. Nothing is sent anywhere, and there's no account.
Why do the keys change every time?
So you learn to hear the shape of a progression or chord, not memorise one key. A vi–IV–I–V sounds like itself in any key.
